Saint-Gilles, La Réunion

GeoHab 2023 was held from May 8 to 12 2023 in Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, La Réunion, France. The conference was co-hosted by the French national research institute on sustainable development IRD and the South African Council of Geoscience.

Helsinki, Finland

GeoHab 2011 was held 3 – 6 May 2011 in Helsinki, Finland. The conference was hosted by the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK, www.gtk.fi) on the premises of GTK at Betonimiehenkuja 4, Espoo, and located in the city of Espoo in the Helsinki metropolitan area.
The main focus of the conference was the Development of New Methodologies to Map the Marine Environment in Support of Sustainable Ocean Management.

The scientific themes of GeoHab 2011 conference were:

  • Habitat mapping of shallow seas
  • Scale and variability in habitat distribution and diversity
  • Habitat mapping serving ecosystem based management
  • Advances in optical remote sensing of marine habitats

Orcas Island, Washington, USA

GeoHab 2012 – Eleventh International Symposium

The 2012 GeoHab conference was held 1 – 4 May on Orcas Island. This island is the largest of the San Juan Islands, lying in the Salish Sea (comprising the Strait of Georgia, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Puget Sound) between the coast of the state of Washington, USA, and Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

GeoHab 2004 was held 5-7 May 2004 at the Connemara Coast Hotel, Furbo, Co. Galway, Ireland. The conference was organized by a team lead by Anthony Grehan and Colin Brown of the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences of the National University of Ireland, Galway.

The major themes of the conference were the Irish National Seabed Survey, seabed classification schemes, and a common habitat mapping approach.

The meeting was jointly sponsored by the Irish Marine Institute and the Geological Survey of Ireland.

Wellington, New Zealand

GeoHab 2010 was held 4–7 May 2010 in Wellington, New Zealand, at the beautiful and historic Wellington Town Hall. The conference was organized by Geoffroy Lamarche (Convener and Chair of Committees), with the able assistance of a local organizing committee of fourteen and a scientific committee of ten. The overall theme of the conference was Characterization, Quantification and Diversity of Extreme Habitats.

There were sixteen sponsoring companies/institutions of GeoHab 2010. Two “gold” sponsors were Kongsberg Maritime and the Commonwealth Environment Research Facilities – Australian Marine Biodiversity Research Hub. Support and financial contributions from sponsors and exhibitors enabled GeoHab 2010 to enjoy the excellent venue and a diverse social program.

From the Mihimihi (traditional Maori welcome) to the successful post-conference field trip, GeoHab 2010 provided attendees a glimpse of New Zealand and its culture as well as the opportunity to hear about and discuss outstanding marine scientific research.
